I think we are dealing with different forms or kinds of depression here. Those of you who are saying "Happiness is a state of mind", "Just be happy" are talking about "being depressed" to mean having the blues.
The depression I am talking about, that my husband suffered from, is clinical depression -- a debilitating, severe, long-term MENTAL ILLNESS. It can be caused by trauma, including child abuse; it can be caused by a chemical imabalance in the brain and body; it can be genetic. This form of depression is NOT temporary. My husband suffered from it the majority of his life. It can not be controlled by mediatation, "happy thoughts" or force of will, though these things can help. It has bizarre, frightening mental and physical symptoms. People with clinical depression suffer actual physical pain because of it. They can not "just be happy", they need medical and psychological help to combat this.
