The International Criminal Court’s Chief Prosecutor will update the U.N. Security Council this week on indictments issued for two alleged war criminals in Sudan. Both indictees are suspected of orchestrating systematic campaigns of rape as a tool of war.

The update reminds us that as the world works to deploy peacekeepers and reestablish a peace process, we must also work towards justice. Rampant sexual violence is just one symptom of the culture of impunity that pervades Darfur. Until the perpetrators of war crimes are brought to justice, real peace will remain elusive.

11/30/07 - The Deception Continues

Sudan’s president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir is once again trying to thwart the will of the international community and threatening to block deployment of peacekeepers for Darfur.

"He said he accepted the force unconditionally when the U.N. Security Council were in Khartoum last June," said Larry Rossin, former U.N. Ambassador and board member of the Save Darfur Coalition. "And here he is lying again."

Legendary film director Steven Spielberg has appealed to Chinese President Hu Jintao for a second time to use China’s influence over Sudan to end the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. In a November 15 letter to Hu released Thursday, Spielberg, who is serving as an artistic advisor for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said the situation in Darfur had deteriorated since he last wrote him in April.

US envoy threatens Sudan with UN sanctions over Darfur force.
The US envoy to the UN on Thursday threatened Sudan with additional sanctions if it continued to drag its feet on allowing the deployment of 26,000 UN-African Union peacekeepers in Darfur. “There has been a record of the Sudanese government dragging its feet in implementing agreements,” Zalmay Khalilzad told reporters after Security Council consultations on the stalled deployment of the force known as UNAMID in the strife-torn Sudanese region.

US Senate passes Sudan divestment bill.
Despite Bush administration opposition, the U.S. Senate gave a green light to a grass-roots effort urging investors to withdraw their funds from companies doing business in Sudan because of violence in its Darfur region.

We must stand for the good peoples in Africa as well as anywhere else in the world. We also must stand together to stop all the butal crimes against humanity that are happening in the Darfur region. There's many descions to cosider. We all know we cannot stop this in a peaceful way. It will take a force of power and determination. But again, peace is what we strive for and we do not beleive any good can come from waging war. Or maybe in this case it is clearer that we must fight a war. So now we conflct with our own selves as to how to proceed. But every passing hour there are more crimes commited against these good people. Is it time yet that we realize a force fighting evil is a good thing. And shall we get this done so the genocide ends as soon as possible?

hey there was a day a while back. JUST THIS DAY when they got everyone to be still for these kids, its a nice idea, but i cant see how it would help except sentimentally.

By dialing 1-800-GENOCID(E) (1-800-436-6243) in Canada, you are immediately connected to a host of MPs including prime-minister Stephen Harper, Maxime Bernier amoung others so that you may leave a message for them to take action.

A similar program exists in the US. Admittedly, I am not too familiar with American politics (I'm Canadian) but it essentially contacts you with your senator so that you may leave a message.

Young women are particularly vulnerable in Darfur. The Darfur conflict has placed women and young girls in severe danger of assault as they flee their ruined villages. Camps run by humanitarian organizations like Mercy Corps help to keep them safe.

An unthinkable wave of violence continues to wash over the western region of Darfur, an area roughly the size of France located in Sudan, the largest nation in Africa. Since 2003, the conflict between the government-backed Janjaweed militia and rebel groups has resulted in the deaths of at least 200,000 and possibly as many as 400,000, the majority of whom are innocent civilians.

I belong to an organization that does action campaigns for Darfur (STAND Canada) and we're looking at divesting at our University from Chinese firms that do buisness with Khartoum. The janjaweed militia is being bank-rolled by China, so we're hoping to cut out their income right from the source. Details/firms to come!!!
